Review for Chew on This

Whenever you eat Mac. Donald's and order a Big Mac with fries, have you ever think about how is it made or where does it  even come from? You probably might think sure they said in that commercial said that it came from the freshest ingredients. But do you know that french fries are kept fresh under a heat lamp over night so that fry is probably a week old and that meat probably have piss. All these facts are from " Chew on this: Everything you don't want to know about fast food". The book teaches kids the history of fast food, and shows them the impact it has had on society. The books also teaches about the chemicals in the food, how junk food is marketed and why kids make great targets for marketing, how animals are raised and killed, and what it is doing to our bodies. What drawn me into the book was the facts and statistics. For example,
“In 1970, Americans spent about $6 billion on fast food; in 2000, they spent more than $110 billion. Americans now spend more money on fast food than on higher education, personal computers, computer software, or new cars. They spend more on fast food than on movies, books, magazines, newspapers, videos, and recorded music—combined.” or like,
“Behind them lies a simple explanation for why eating a hamburger can now make you seriously ill: There is shit in the meat.”
I personally thought that it was a fraud but when I look up these fact, I was quite surprise how accurate it was. This is an excellent look on fast food's impact on society. The invention of the hamburger, the role of soda in toothless Yupik Eskimos, the workers behind the counter of a McDonalds, the teen getting gastric bypass, how McNuggets are made...etc. Chew On This has some gross content like depiction of a slaughterhouse and organs that were damaged from fast food. It also helps me( a teenager) think about my on eating habits compare to average teenager's diet. Over all, I would recommend this to every age because it will inform you a lot about what really happens in a fast-food restaurant and  where the hamburgers and fries came from.

Chew on that chapter 1

Chapter 1 of Chew on That was informative like how people would recognize the MC.Donald logo rather than the Christan cross. I knew about some things about what was really happening in fast food restaurant. For me, that was just review of something.

Bowling for Columbine review

Bowling for Columbine mad me think of the gun laws currently. I would recommend it because it brings a good point about guns and would probably use it for debates. I learned that America has more shooting deaths than any other country( I think) and how people in media rather care about people with a gun rather than, for example, pollution or a person drowning. I like how the filmmaker bring up his point about guns. What I didn't like was how horrifying the facts are such as the casualties in wars and the dead bodies dragging like a rag doll. This also got me mad about today and how they still allowed guns, for example, the state of Georgia allowing people to have guns in libraries, schools, etc. It got me thinking about if anyone learned since Columbine or even Sandy Hook.

Symbols in The Robber Bridegroom

When you first read a book ,novel, comic, or newspaper, you don't really see the symbols. But once you read it more closely that  symbol are hidden in plain sight. In one such example, in The Grimm Brothers The Robber Bridegroom, the bird in the cage represents being trapped. In the story the bride hears a voice crying out " turn back, turn back, you young bridge. You're in a murderer's house." as a warning to not get killed. But, both brides simply ignore the warning, both brides ending up getting killed and eaten by the robber.

work in progress: What makes a story?

To me, the things that are important in a story are character development and plot. What I like about character development is that you can know the character more in depth. You can also relate that character to in real life.  You might even grow attachment of the character for; their personality, looks, and actions. These can also hate a certain character. Even sometimes might even pair up certain characters into a couple. But, you don’t have to be embarrassed with that because it’s your opinion and some people might like it, some not but it’s their opinion and should respect it.

What I like about plot is that it gets you intrigue in the story and it leaves you wondering what might happen next. Sometimes the plot can be good some can be bad. To me, the plot is the thing that lets readers liking the book because without a good plot, it’s just boring.

Review for M is for magic( WIP)

Over break I've read a short story collection called M is for Magic by Neil Gaison. He particularly writes fantasy stories one of he's famous books is Coraline ( which I loved )The stories strengths is also its weakness which is mainly just some stories just lacked what it intended for and others were just amazing.

I really liked The Witch's Headstone, which was a story about a real boy who was been living in a graveyard and raised by ghosts. He decides to do a very kind thing for a ghost who didn't get a gravestone and the story really follows the adventure that goes with his decision.

The story I really love is,The Case of the four and twenty blackbirds. In this story the author's uses a spin on a nursery rhyme . Basically it's a detective needs to solve the mystery of who killed Humpty Dumpty. It is told with attitude and is very funny. The author put the character more in depth as if the character came to life. Gaison also uses foreshadowing to show hints about what really happened to Humpty Dumpty.

This book was intended for  elementary / middle school but besides that I would recommend it for people who love Gaison's work and for young adults who loves fantasy or .

Grieving of a Sunflower

A bullet goes through my head.

My kids, seeing everything, ran to me as I dropped onto the cold tile floor. On my last breaths I told them how much I loved them, but as everything turned dark I saw the coldness of my husband’s stare.

I thought about my life.

Coming from a rich family I had everything, but wasn't happy.

My older brother molested me when I was 8 but my parents didn’t care. In fact,  they all raped me over and over. Finally, I ran away. I went into a small town in the south of Italy where all the flowers bloomed and kept me safe. I started making a living as a florist, and after a couple years I had enough money to get away from the past and into the free land.

When I got to Brooklyn, I went to see my great-aunt Louisa. She was an old kindred soul who recently had a terrible disease and no one was there to take care of her. One day while buying groceries, I bumped into a bunch of men who surrounded me.

“Oh, what a pretty little lady doing in the mean streets she might get herself hurt with all the big men,” one man said.

“Give this bitch what she deserves!” another cried out as I suddenly was held by a few men who ripped off my dress. As they were about to take off their pants, one of my captors was knocked out by a karate chop. My savior knocked the rest out by kicks and punches, then he helped me up, lending me his jacket.

He said,“Siete bene, signorina?”
“Yes, I’m okay. Thank you for saving me, ” I replied.
“You’re welcome signorina. I’ll walk you back home. Just be careful next time when you’re around here. Hey, I haven’t seen you here before. What’s your name?”
“Oh, how rude. I’m Ariana. You?”
“Marco. Hey, I was wondering if you want to hang out sometime.”
I blushed at his offer and accepted. That encounter, we started to see each other more and afterwards we got married and had two kids together. I thought we would be together forever.I didn’t know at the time but but the man who saved me,the one who I fell in love with, was gone.

He became the mob boss after his father died and he started gambling, killing people, using drugs, occasionally sleeping with other women and even men. He became addicted to the unwanted desires, and I started to feel the past consuming me slowly. The past kept on consuming me like a disease until finally Marco said he didn't want me anyone , and pulled the trigger ending me. I thought to myself as a dim light faded from my eyes,Was my life meant to be crap the whole time?

A Happy Marriage

" I can't believe you're cheating on me! We're having a divorce"
Those words were the last she ever said to me before she was gone. My wife the only true person who ever cared and loved me is gone because of my selfish ways. If I see her again , I would hold her close in my arms telling her I'm sorry for ever hurting you after so many years. But, I guess it's too late for apologies now. She's with another man who can truly appreciate her. Finally, she's truly happy with her bright smile and her goddess like face filled with the joy I could not being during our marriage. Her happiness make me finally happy and ready to move on with life.
Who knows maybe I find another woman again like her one day.
